Katie Couric Chooses New Evening Sign-Off with the Help of Neighborhood America
Neighborhood America recently had the privilege to support the search for a byline by one of media's most trusted personalities - Katie Couric. To motivate viewers about Couric's addition to the network, CBS called for online suggestions to help identify her program sign-off to the CBS Evening News.
Within 48 hours
of the announcement, over 33,000 comments had been submitted. At the
peak of the activity, Neighborhood America’s system easily handled
eight submissions per second, and even at this level of participation,
the engineered server infrastructure had reached only a fraction of its
capacity.
CBS executives were able to manage the submissions with minimal effort or time investments, selecting those that
match their production objectives and audience tastes. Results were easily transformed into instant reports and used by CBS executives to make what they consider to be a serious decision for an American institution - the CBS Evening News sign-off.

Leveraging User Generated Content
So you ask your viewers to send in their thoughts. Now what?
For
most companies this is the proverbial double edged sword. On the one hand, getting a
lot of content might mean your audience thinks you’re hip enough to send
| |
|
their content to. And it would also be a moral victory for you to tell
everyone that you have figured out the whole social networking “thing.”
On the other hand, you may have 18,000 comments and 2,600 videos and
photos clogging up your inbox. Now what?
Popular sites such as YouTube, MySpace and Facebook are getting a lot of attention for their ability to attract a
huge audience and entertain people for a few hours a week (but really,
how many times can you watch skateboarders impale themselves on a
handrail?) While these companies are relative infants in the world of
established media and corporate brands, they have yet to turn a profit
or even figure out the basic question of “Now What?” They do serve a
purpose and have raised the social bar for inclusion, but is this model
right for everyone?
The business value for
media companies is much different. They want audience participation yet
cannot afford to expose the brands they have built over 60 years to
unstructured, uncontrolled environments. At the same time most
media companies are struggling with other colossal issues like new
distribution platforms and lagging assets.
Now
the dream that every media executive has, “Wouldn’t it be nice to build
a community, leverage that content across ALL my assets (yes, even
newspapers) AND be able to drive new forms of revenue from content
submissions?”
Neighborhood America
is helping our customers to understand how to structure inbound content,
leverage it across multiple platforms and assets and drive new
mainstream revenue.
